Badger Pork Day scheduled for May 21
Pork producers, youth, county fair swine superintendents, and others with an interest in Wisconsin’s pork industry are invited to attend Badger Pork Day. This event will be held on Saturday, May 21 at the Arlington Public Events Building in Arlington, Wisconsin. Registration will begin at 9:15 a.m., and the program will run from 9:45 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Three educational tracks will be offered during the day – adult pork producers, youth project members, and county fair swine superintendents or volunteers. In addition, staff from the University of Wisconsin will be on hand with displays featuring activities and research in their swine facilities.
Adult Track Agenda
10 a.m.
– Use of phytase and DDGS in swine diets – Tom Crenshaw, UW-Madison
– Tips to Reduce Feed Costs – Zen Miller, UW-Extension Swine Team
– Feed management tools – Mahlon Peterson, UW-Extension Swine Team
11 a.m.
– Animal care principles – Randy Thompson, UW-Extension Swine Team
– Transportation tips for hogs – Dave Wachter, UW-Extension Swine Team
– Is Wisconsin Next – An Update on HSUS activities – Mike Wehler, Wisconsin Pork Association
Noon – Lunch – Featuring an update on identification efforts in Wisconsin with Robert Fourdraine, Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium
– Poster Session, featuring research on Zinc and Paylean, Corn co-products, and Evaluating foot lesions on sows
1 p.m. – Tour of the Arlington Swine Research Station, featuring discussions on gilt performance, artificial insemination, and heat detection – Tom Crenshaw, UW-Madison, and Jamie Reichert, Station Manager
3 p.m. – Adjourn
Youth Track Agenda
10 a.m. – Virtual tour of Arlington Swine Research Station, featuring demonstrations on artificial insemination and baby pig management – Jamie Reichert, Station Manager
Noon – Lunch – Featuring an update on identification efforts in Wisconsin with Robert Fourdraine, Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium
– Poster Session, featuring research on Zinc and Paylean, Corn co-products, and Evaluating foot lesions on sows
1 p.m.
– Tips on moving pigs, loading, unloading, and handling at county fairs and shows, including a live demonstration – Dave Wachter, and members of the UW-Extension Swine Team
2 p.m. – Showmanship – tips from a experienced showman
– Public Relations at the Fair – how to be an advocate for agriculture, Bernie O’Rourke, UW Extension & Tammy Vaassen, Wisconsin Pork Association
3 p.m. – Adjourn

Note – this agenda does not begin until 11 a.m., however participants are welcome to come and sit in on any of the other morning sessions
